A five member women- team of eminent activists, journalists and civil society members recently visited Kashmir.
The team wanted to see with their own eyes how this 43 day lockdown had affected the people, particularly women and children Kashmir after the Centre’s decision of abrogating Articles 370 and 35A of the Indian Constitution The team comprising Annie Raja, Kawaljit Kaur, Pankhuri Zaheer from National Federation Indian Women, Poonam Kaushik from Pragatisheel Mahila Sangathan and Syeda Hameed from Muslim Women’s Forum visited Kashmir between September 17 and 21.
Apart from Srinagar, the women visited several villages in Shipian, Pulwama and Bandipora to take stock of ground realities. They have now released their report based on eye witness accounts and case studies of those who have actually suffered.
While releasing the report at a press conference at Press Club of India, Delhi, Annie Raja said that the team had interacted with all the sections of Kashmiris including students, teachers, professors, income tax officers, doctors, farmers, house wives, young girls, fisherfolk, National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) workers, Jammu and Kashmir police force and even few army men.
THE REPORT The team reached the valley on the 43th day of the siege; seven more days have passed since then. Shops, hotels, schools, colleges, institutions and universities were closed.
“Human life there is in tragedy, ” Annie said.
