NEW DELHI: At least 10 people, all with criminal antecedents, were arrested on Tuesday for indulging in arson and setting vehicles afire during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in New Friends Colony near Jamia Millia Islamia University here on Sunday.
However, none of those arrested were Jamia students, the police said.
Delhi Police has registered two separate cases against unknown people for arson and rioting on Monday.
Jamia Millia Islamia University had turned into a battlefield on Sunday with police using batons and teargas shells to disperse the violent mob and entered the Jamia university campus following violence and arson during protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act .
Jamia authorities and students claimed they had nothing to do with the violence and arson during the protest and alleged that “certain elements” had joined in and disrupted the peaceful march.
Several educational institutions across the country have come out in support of the students of the Jamia Millia Islamia after the incident.
