Kolkata: The Chief Minister of Bengal, Mamata Banerjee led a massive protest march against the Citizenship Amendment Act on Monday.
The march started from the statue of BR Ambedkar on Red Road to Jorasanko Thakurbari – the childhood home of Rabindranath Tagore.
Earlier in the day, CM tweeted urging people to take part in the mega rally to voice their opinion against the CAB. She said, “A mega rally will be held today in Kolkata to protest against unconstitutional CAB Bill and NRC. It will begin at 1 pm near the statue of Babasaheb Ambedkar on Red Road and end at Jorasanko Thakurbari. Come, let us all, every section of society, join this people’s movement in a peaceful manner within the ambit of the law.” WB CM: Only BJP will remain here&everyone else will be made to leave-it’s their politics. It’ll never happen. India is everyone’s. Agar sabka sath nahi rahega toh sabka vikas kaise hoga? Who is the #CitizenshipAct for? We’re all citizens. Didn’t you cast vote?Don’t you live here? pic.twitter.com/exJNJenXsh — ANI (@ANI) December 16, 2019 “Harmony of all religions is our principle in life. We will not allow NRC and CAA in Bengal,” she said, adding that “the Centre will have to implement the law (NRC and CAA) over my dead body,” Mamta said at the rally.
She further said, “We will continue our protest till the Citizenship Amendment Act and National Register of Citizens(NRC) are withdrawn. Once I was alone. Today Delhi’s CM says that he won’t allow this. Bihar’s CM says that he won’t allow NRC too, I tell him don’t allow Citizenship Amendment Act too” She further plans to hold similar marches till Wednesday to highlight her fierce opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Bill.
